Cityscapes
Hideko Kawamoto
About this work:
Composed in 1996, Cityscapes for solo marimba consists of three main sections. The first section starts rhythmically and energetically to express the active and fun part of the city life. From the second half of the first section, the complexity of city life gradually appears, which is represented by the rhythms of three against four, four against five and so on. This complexity is absorbed into the mysterious atmosphere of the night in the middle section. It is almost like beautiful moths shimmering in the air of the night. In the last section, the irregularity of the middle section is now transformed gradually into the regularity starting on the drone figures. The images from the former sections are juxtaposed and became one overlapped image toward the end of the last section.
