A Dream Of Waking

Dan Becker

About this work:
A Dream of Waking is a 14-minute piece for violin and piano. The title comes from some Buddhist writings, and was used in a passage describing the peculiarities of our human consciousness. The phrase kept haunting me as I was writing this piece, and seemed to capture some of its qualities: a restless state of self-searching, an ambiguous sense of directionality, a dreamlike sense of time. For me, the piece almost seems to be struggling with itself to comprehend just whether it is awake, or dreaming, ...or something in between.
