Penseroso

John de Clef Piñeiro

About this work:
Non-tonal in idiom, the essence of this work is what happens in time as sound and silence alternate. Intended as a virtuosic "meditation" for solo violin, Penseroso is both an exacting study in technical execution, as well as an aesthetic challenge in timing and expression. From the audience, the work demands only a receptive attention to the artistry of the performer and the use of space following each musical "thought." This work is dedicated to violinist Yuri Vodovoz of the Alaria trio. (It received its world premiere in New York City, on March 4, 2006, and was subsequently reprised at Steinway Hall on October 29, 2006, and at Saint Peter's Church at Citigroup Center on June 5, 2007.)
