By Air, Bright Air, for string orchestra, gets its title from Empedocles (of Acagras in Sicily, c. 492-432 BC), who is best known, for his belief that all matter was composed of four elements: fire, air, water, and earth. As he wrote in his Fragments, “for by earth we see earth, and by water water, and by air bright air; so, too, by fire brilliant fire.”
