CELESTIAL TURNINGS

Tina Davidson

About this work:
Premiered by Orchestra 2001 at the Kimmel Center, Philadelphia, PA, Celestial Turnings has to do with the ebb and flow of the cosmos, a turning round, a moving through landscapes and pushing out into a new place. The one movement work has four sections; the first is powerful and swift; the second is quiet and airy. The third section is marked “full of energy,” which opens into a final expansive turning. “Celestial Turning has a bedrock of quasi-minimalist cells of repeated melody and rhythm, over which terse gestures and graceful glissandos unfold … the music's sharp-focused clarity of vision gives it a sense of expressive imperative – the piece says this is the way it had to be.” [Philadelphia Inquirer]
