CELESTIAL TURNINGS
Tina Davidson
About this work:
A one movement work in four sections influenced by the composer’s childhood in Istanbul, “Music sometimes arrives in your life with an air of inevitability. You know you're hearing something for the first time, but your brain seems to have been secretly waiting for it. The ultimate, paradoxical effect is that of a musical homecoming with a total stranger, which happened at the premiere of Tina Davidson's new work, Celestial Turning” (David Patrick Stearns, Inquirer).
Premiered by Orchestra 2001 at the Kimmel Center, Philadelphia, PA, Celestial Turnings has to do with the ebb and flow of the cosmos, a turning round, a moving through landscapes and pushing out into a new place. The one movement work has four sections; the first is powerful and swift; the second is quiet and airy. The third section is marked “full of energy,” which opens into a final expansive turning.
