Football Season is Over

Stephen Gorbos

About this work:
When I started writing "Football Season is Over" my goal was to rework an earlier piece of mine, "what hath bird?", for alto saxophone and drum set. As I was working "Football Season" took on a life of its own, and proceeded to grow into an entirely different work than its predecessor. "what hath bird?" was an attempt to work through my tumultuous relationship with bebop and the virtuoso tradition of the alto saxophone in jazz. It is an angry piece, and a tension runs through it that is never resolved. "Football Season is Over" starts on the same turbulent and confused plateau that "what hath bird?" never leaves. Resolution and transcendence are the goals of this new piece. The electronic part is made up entirely of the recorded speech of Louis Armstrong and John Coltrane. The title "Football Season is Over" is taken from Hunter S Thompson's suicide note. The piece was composed for Randall Hall.
