Prelude and Excursion

Kevin McCarter

About this work:
The harmonies and melodic lines of the calm, sustained prelude are as richly colored as an autumn afternoon. The excursion is a rhythmic journey through subtly changing scenery, exploring patterns and interactions of rhythms among the instruments. Its harmonies begin with a sunny C major chord. They become more chromatic as the excursion moves on until they reach a phrase as colorful as the prelude. A new melodic figure, bringing together intervals and rhythms previously heard separately, then enters in the tuba, climbs into the upper parts, and leads to the end of the excursion, which briefly recalls its opening.
