SOUTHERN VOICES
Sorrel Hays
About this work:
Based on the inflections and rhythms of southern dialect, SOUTHERN VOICES FOR SOPRANO AND ORCHESTRA was commissioned for the 50th birthday of the Chattanooga Symphony Orchestra. It includes a section for soprano, trombone and trumpet to improvise based on melodic "speech" introduced earlier in the piece. Tutti sections alternate with solo sections for soprano and piano. Orchestral texture includes solos for various instruments overlaid in a thick collage which weaves hymn-like passages into hoe-down rhythms. Published by Henar Press, C.F. Peters Corp.
