About this work:
This String Quartet was composed in 1995 while still under the spell of the minimalists. The first movement is in ABA form, set in D Mixolydian and D Dorian, and is largely based on a Floyd Cramer piano riff, which itself is derived from a fiddle riff. The second movement features the cello in a rendition of Dufay's, Se la face ay pale, described by Patrick McCreless as "one of the great tunes of all time." The concluding third movement is a rondo whose A sections are dominated by canonic technique--my take on the minimalist procedure, "phasing." (CD)
