12.15.89 : concerto

Drake Mabry

About this work:
In two contrasting movements, this concerto was written for the soprano saxophone virtuoso, John Sampen. The first movement is in the style of a 'Lament'. The soprano saxophone part in the second movement is inspired by the virtuosity and expressiveness of Eric Dolphy's playing while the strings provide a cushion from which the saxophone part enters and emerges. The writing for the strings reminds me of the great expanses of space in the midwest during my long drives from Vermont to California.
