Elementi
Karen P. Thomas
About this work:
Elementi is a duet for clarinet and percussion, in four movements.
The four movements bear the names of the four elements which were once regarded as constituting the material universe -- earth, air, water and fire -- each movement portraying the distinctive characteristics of the corresponding element. Thematic material is derived from the letters of the names of three friends who supported the creation of this work.
Elementi was composed in 1990 for Laura DeLuca and Matthew Kocmieroski. The piece is dedicated to the individuals who commissioned it, Molly McGee and Sylvia Pollack.
Elementi won first prize in the 1993 Delius Festival Composition Competition. It has received numerous performances throughout the United States.
