Girl on the Via Flamina, The
Waddy Thompson
About this work: Based on the novel by Alfred Hays and with a libretto by Elsa Rael, The Girl on the Via Flaminia concerns the forced relationship between a young Italian woman (Lisa) and an American soldier (Robert) in the final days of World War II. Robert seeks solace in the arms of Lisa, who in desperation has no other choice but to sell herself to stay alive. Despite the situation, she begins to have feelings for Robert, who has definitely fallen in love with her. Their landlord, Ugo, keeps a watchful eye on the relationship, seeing the heartbreak that lies ahead. After a policeman accidentally discovers their arrangement and requires Lisa to register as a prostitute, Lisa commits suicide, just as Robert was preparing to take her away from Rome.
The vocal writing is largely lyrical, although the harmonic language is dissonant, except for one tonal aria in which Lisa remembers a past simpler life. The work was presented in a workshop by Encompass New Opera Theatre.
