PAUL MORAVEC is the composer of over seventy published orchestral, chamber, choral, and lyric compositions as well as several film scores and electro-acoustic pieces.
His music has earned numerous distinctions, including the Rome Prize fellowship from the American Academy in Rome, a Fellowship in Music Composition from the National Endowment for the Arts, a Rockefeller Foundation Fellowship, a Camargo Foundation Residency Fellowship, a Goddard Lieberson Fellowship and Charles Ives Fellowship from the American Academy of Arts & Letters, a Bearns Prize in Music Composition, a MacArthur Residency Fellowship from the Yaddo Corporation, commissions from Chamber Music America, the Barlow Endowment, the Lila Acheson Wallace Fund, the International Trumpet Guild, The Dessoff Choirs, the Denver Chamber Orchestra, the Jupiter Symphony, Musical Elements (NYC), and the New Hampshire State Arts Council.
He is a graduate of Harvard University (1980 BA – Music/Magna cum Laude) and Columbia University (M.A., D.M.A.). His principal teachers include Fred Lerdahl, Jack Beeson, and Mario Davidovsky. He has taught at Harvard, Columbia, Dartmouth, Hunter College (CUNY) and currently teaches at Adelphi University.
On compact disc: SONGS OF LOVE AND WAR for SATB Chorus/Orchestra on a CD featuring The Dessoff Choirs & Orchestra (2000). His SONATA FOR VIOLIN AND PIANO was released in 48 countries world-wide by BMG/RCA Classics in September, 1993. In January, 1993, his orchestral work SPIRITDANCE , recorded by the Slovak Radio Orchestra appeared on the Vienna Modern Masters label. In May, 1993, an album of his chamber compositions titled CIRCULAR DREAMS appeared on the CRI label.
The current season features several world premieres: Eighth Blackbird performs THE TIME GALLERY at the Metropolitan Museum of Art on April 27, the Bachmann/Hoffman duo performs ARIEL FANTASY on April 2 in Paris, Marya Martin and the Bridgehampton Chamber Players present CONCERTO FOR FLUTE AND CHAMBER ENSEMBLE in August, and the International Trumpet Guild will present the U.S. premiere of QUINTESSENCE at its annual convention in late May.
He has been featured Composer-in-Residence with the 1993 Composers’ Conference of the East at Bennington College. He co-edited and contributed to the premiere U.S. issue of The Contemporary Music Review, titled "New Tonality" regarding uses and views of tonality in late 20th century composition. His compositions are published by Subito Music.
