The Well of Immortality: Chamber Opera in One Act

Martin Halpern

About this work:
Freely based on W.B. Yeats's play "At the Hawk's Well," the opera derives some of its technique from the Japanese Noh drama tradition. The cast consists of two singer-narrators (tenor and soprano); an Old Man (bass); a Young Man (baritone); and a Woman of indeterminate age (silent role). The orchestra consists of a flute and a cello. The setting, abstractly rendered, consists simply of representations of a well and of upstage boulders. Time and place are purposefully undefined.
