In 1994 Martin Halpern retired from an active career as playwright, poet, critic and professor of Theater Arts at Brandeis University to devote himself full-time to what had long been a part-time occupation: music composition. Since then he has earned a Master's degree in Composition at the Aaron Copland School of Music, Queens College, and there have been more than eighty performances of his chamber and vocal works and fifteen productions of his chamber operas in the New York area. He has won nine ASCAP-PLUS awards and eleven Meet the Composer grants, and from 1997 to 2009 was concerts director of the Long Island Composers Alliance.
