Freely based on the final scenes of Henrik Ibsen's play, the opera dramatizes the confrontation between the aged anti-hero Peer Gynt and an emissary from the place where human lives are judged, who informs him that his failure to fulfill his life's destiny means that upon his death he will be "melted down like all such damaged goods." After initially resisting this judgment, Peer finally becomes resigned to it as Solveig, the wife he abandoned many years ago, takes him in her lap and, with maternal gentleness, sings him to his final slee
