String Quartet # 3

Martin Halpern

About this work:
The first and third movements of the quartet are in somewhat condensed classical forms: a sonata-allegro and a rondo. The second movement, "Nocturne," is a contrastingly lyrical slow movement in aba form. The melodic and harmonic language is pervasively chromatic, and the three movements are tied together by a recurrent motif of descending and ascending octave leaps which underly the other motivic elements and their development.
