The Death of Oedipus

Martin Halpern

About this work:
Freely based on Sophocles' "Oedipus at Colonus," the opera dramatizes the last day in the life of Oedipus and his death and transfiguration at Colonus after years of wandering with his daughter Anitigone. The cast is reduced to just five perfomers -- the aged and blind Oedipus, the thirty-five-year-old Antigone, two middle-aged citizens of Colonus, and a young Theban officer; and the action is compacted to about thirty-five minutes.
