The opera is freely based on the 14th century Japanese Noh drama "Hachi No Ki" by Seami, treated here as a timeless morality play. The cast consists of a Pilgrim (baritone), a displaced nobleman, Tsuneyo (tenor), and Tsuneyo's wife (soprano). The orchesta consists of a flute and cello.
