Freely based on a tale by the 18th-century Hasidic Rabbi Nachman of Bratslav, the opera -- set in the "province of parable" -- explores issues of faith and human virtue in the development over a seven year period of its central characters: the humble cobbler Tameem; his devoted wife Akara; his worldly friend Aruhm; and a Messenger sent down to them by the remote and inscrutable Sovereign of the land.
