Fantasy for Cello and Orchestra
Martin Halpern
About this work:
I call this work a fantasy in the sense of a free-form structure characterized by motivic recurrences which, though always clearly recognizeable, follow no set pattern. The primary motivic material is presented in the opening cello solo, and contrasting secondary motifs are introduced along the way in both the tutti and and sectional orchestral writing. The interplay among these motifs, and between the cello and the various voices in the orchestra, is what gives unity to the work.
