Trio For Flute, Clarinet And Cello
Martin Halpern
About this work:
The trio is in two movements. The first begins with a slow prelude, followed by a lively scherzo in classical aabbccab form. The slower "trio" section sets a ground of open fifths in the cello under a jig-like tune in the flute and clarinet -- a small tribute to my Scottish mentor Thea Musgrave. The second movement is in the form of a baroque chaconne -- a series of continuous variations on a theme in slow three-quarter time.
