BALLATA

William M. Holroyd

About this work:
The BALLATA was an important poetry and music form in 14th century Italy. The poetry component usually consisted of three stanzas of six lines each preceded and postceded by a two line refrain. In this composition, I chose only the music component using the form of the poetry component described above. The world premiere took place at the Strathmore Hall Arts Center in Rockville,MD on March 3, 2004 with the distinguished musicologist Joel Lazar conducting.
