Malibu Danbury

Carolyn Bremer

About this work:
Malibu Danbury was commission by St. Lawrence University for their concert commemorating Charles Ives’ in 2004. The work relates to Ives' penchant for his musical memory, and the many pieces which recreate his recollections of childhood experiences in Danbury, Connecticut. In that vein, I returned to music from my past, to the music of Malibu and the 60's. The source material is that of surf rock, a niche genre spearheaded by the maniacal double-picking of guitarist Dick Dale. The piece is rather schizophrenic. One might listen to it to identify the transmogrification of surf rock or perhaps (and in vain) to some elusive structural continuity, but I recommend concentrating on the parodic warping of the orchestration of drum set into prepared piano because it has a good beat.
