Voyage to the Sun

Michael Gatonska

About this work:
Voyage to the Sun was completed in 2003and revised for performance in 2005. Although the work is not a programmatic composition, the music begins with slowly graded harmonies and elongated lines; a kind of "creationism". From the height of this beginning material, a kind of voyage begins. Initial and new musical ideas are then formally pushed, fused, and explored sonorically, with continually added fresh music materials and sources to propel the music forward. As a result, multiple ideas will appear in various simultaneities, justapositions, and orchestral colorings. American hymns, Shaker songs, Native American music influences, and rhythms from Colombia may be found in the streams of textures that permeate the music. This global process continues until the final measures of the composition.
