'SIGOL' FOR STRINGS for String Orchestra

Brian Fennelly

About this work:

Written for the Woodstock Chamber Orchestra during a Copland House composer residency in 2007 and completed in 2008, the two movements are 1) the expressive Dreams and Fantasies and 2) a robust Fugue, both fashioned from the outer movements of String Quartet No. 3 of 2005, extended and texturally elaborated for string orchestra with significant solo parts from among the musicians. The polyphonic portions reflect a concern with earlier musical textures: the Renaissance fantasia and the Barogue fugue. The 'Sigol' of the title refers to the composer's young granddaughter Sigol Sara Fennelly, embodied in the opening melodic line, from which the materials of the piece derive. The piece was premiered by the Woodstock Chamber Orchestra, David leighton conductor, in February 2009. It was recorded by the Moravian Philharmonic Orchestra, Joel Eric Suben conducting, in August 2008.
