About this work:
text by Mary Otis Malone. from an 1896 Wellesley College publication "Wellesley Lyrics." A friend found a book of poetry by Wellesley students, faculty, and alumnae dating from 1896 in her parents' basement in Vermont, and had read this particular poem to me over the phone. While it's not the greatest poetry, it did present an interesting scene of two people at a concert, one in love with the other and the other not returning the same affection. The lines "To its very close/the song was of love," prompted me to quote Schumann's Dichterliebe, a quintessential set of songs about love.
