Shadows

Roger Ames

About this work:
Commissioned by Broadway Cares / Equity Fights Aids for their in-school educational program. Shadows is a one act opera that tells the story of two teenagers who have contracted AIDS. While tragic, the piece illuminates the struggle that teens have in seeking help and in telling the truth, to both their peers and their elders. The story tells of two teenagers who have died of the consequences of AIDS, and the attempt by their living friends and relatives to connect with them. The music is accessible, tonal, singable by high school students and professionals alike. The guitar, piano and cello parts are medium difficulty. The story is told in 'song cycle' form. There is some spoken dialogue. Although the piece contains significant dramatic tension, it is a redemption opera with an emotionally powerful message.
