Holon

Christopher Gainey

About this work:
Holon was written for Nicole Esposito who was brave enough to decide to perform a full recital of music for the piccolo. A "holon" is a system or phenomenon that is a whole in itself as well as part of a larger system. The influence of this beautifully simple idea can be seen in many aspects of the score. For example, small motivic cells, which are readily identifiable and relatively self-contained, are continuously transformed and recombined to create larger gestures. In addition, the performer is asked to produce sounds (e.g., singing while playing) that are technically separate from the sound of the piccolo but serve the overall shape of the music and augment the resources available to the performer.
