Program Notes:
Melos I, for solo flute, began as a melodic study that quickly turned into a piece. This piece is a variation set that explores several different types of melodic writing idiomatic to the flute. Specifically focusing on alternative scales and extended playing techniques.
Performance Notes:
If the performer chooses to memorize the piece, please perform it in the dark, while slowly pacing back and forth across the stage. The movement creates an eerie silhouette that fits well with the mood of the piece.
