Chen Yi: With Flowers Blooming for women’s choir [sung in English] (2010), Text by Du Fu (Tang Dynasty). “With Flowers Blooming” for treble voices a cappella is commissioned and premiered by Calvin College Women’s Chorale, directed by Pearl Shangkuan, on April 29, 2011, at the Calvin College, Grand Rapids, MI. Sung in English, the text is from an ancient Chinese poem of Du Fu (712-770), entitled Happy Rain on a Spring Night. Symbolizing the contribution that the CCWC has been making to our culture and society, the music is to ode to the spring rain, to praise the flourishing flowers, and to celebrate the CCWC’s 10th anniversary. Happy Rain on a Spring Night by Du Fu (712-770) Happy rain comes in time, When spring is in its prime. With night breeze it will fall, And quietly moisten all. Clouds darken wild roads, Light brightens a little boat. Saturated at dawn, With flowers blooming the town.
