Cloudrest

Elizabeth Brown

About this work:
Cloudrest was written for Gamelan Son of Lion, who premiered it on May 2nd, 2010, at the Tenri Cultural Institute in New York City, with the composer playing shakuhachi. It uses both gamelan scales, with eight gamelan musicians each playing both slendro and pelog instruments. Shakuhachi and soprano can be lightly amplified if necessary. Ideally, they sit facing each other, one on each side in front of the gamelan. The piece brings the shakuhachi's use of space, silence, and breath into the cyclic rhythms and glorious clamor of the gamelan, with soprano voice serving both as an extension of the shakuhachi sound and aa a link to the gamelan’s sound world.
