Serenata a tre (Cade l'uliva)

Ernesto P. Pellegrini

About this work:
The Serenata a tre, scored fro clarinet in A, cello and harp, was completed in 1984. The work, which was specifically written on the passing of a close relative and therefore dedicated to that person, is based on a popular Italian folksong from the region of Abbruzzi which is east of Rome on the Adriatic Sea. This is the region that has inspired sections of works such as Harold en Italie by Hector Berlioz and Tchaikovsky’s Capriccio Italien. The folk melody “Cade l’uliva” was the source of inspiration. Since the family originated from this part of Italy, the composer felt it was appropriate to make use of it. The melody contains some strong and identifiable characteristics often associated with music of the Near East (such as the interval of the diminished third). The result was the creation of a fantasy-like work that explores the many possible transformations of the folk melody in their textural and neo-tonal contexts
