Delilah

Christopher Gainey

About this work:
Delilah (2006) was written for a friend, who asked for a piece that was, in her words, "slow and beautiful, unlike that modern stuff." The challenge was to write a piece that fulfilled both of our aesthetic expectations. "Slow" and "beautiful" are very subjective guidelines. The title reflects the feeling I had while writing the piece, that my friend had (metaphorically) cut my hair (which was then exceedingly long) and sapped my strength. I am happy to report that my friend is now completely preoccupied with performing music that is peppered with exactly the sort of sounds she asked me to avoid, and I have gotten over my undergraduate fear of abject consonance.
