INNER UNIVERSE, THE
Priscilla McLean
About this work:
THE INNER UNIVERSE is a set of eight surrealistic tone poems for solo piano and recorded sounds on CD or computer. Based on artist/scientist David Scharf's electron-microscope slides, each piece features one slide, now made into computer photograph, that is a magnification of a flower, insect, or mineral. The image and its meaning is the impetus for the music. During the course of the eight pieces, five of which feature the piano with recorded sounds on CD, the other three being solo interludes and encore, a virtual catalog of on-the-string preparations, simple and undamaging devices placed on the strings and quickly removed, are used to enhance the variety of sounds the piano can produce. The score explains how all of this works. Pianists wanting to perform this set, either one or all of the pieces, may want to download the electron-microscope black-and-white photos and have them projected during the performance. The five pieces with recorded sounds total twenty minutes, for a more modest time length. Priscilla McLean toured with this set in the U.S. and Europe from 1985-90, performing in over 50 concerts.
