IN THE MOUNTAINS

Chen Yi

About this work:

In the Mountains for mixed choir and string quartet (2013) by Chen Yi. Commissioned by St. Paul’s Co-Educational College of Hong Kong in 2012, my work In the Mountains is written for mixed choir and string quartet. The text is from a poem written by Su Shi (1037-1100) in Song Dynasty. The choral part is sung in Chinese, and the string quartet plays mainly harmonic notes in a vivid texture. The work is premiered by St. Paul’s Co-Educational College Choir and String Quartet, conducted by Warren Lee in Hong Kong in 2013.

Su Shi (1037-1100): A Poem on Xilin Temple’s Wall (1084)

A mountain range from the front, or a steep peak from the side,

A new shape from near, far, high, or low in sight.

We can’t recognize the true face of Mount Lu,

Because we are right inside.
