Each example is no longer than 3 to 4 min. in duration and can be programmed by a skilled trumpet soloist in a live performance as examples so that #1 might open a program, #s3 & 4 might be played as a pair, or #2 might be included in a group of solo pieces by another composer. The title suggests by the sound of the solo trumpet what an engraving might look like if seen on some flat surface. The many indications to the performer of what the articulation and dynamic settings must sound like is at least as important as merely playing only the right notes in their correct rhytjms.
