Chen Yi

About this work:

Chen Yi: SYMPHONY NO. 1 for full orchestra (1986) [23:07]

The first part of the one-movement symphony begins with a retrograde double fugue and ends in unison before moving into the scherzo-like second part. The third part in Adagio features the solo English horn, saxophone, and viola, representing individuals’ thinking on the human society. The work was premiered by the Central Philharmonic Orchestra at Beijing Concert Hall when the composer became the first woman to obtain a master’s degree in music composition from the CCoM in China and gave a whole evening concert of her orchestral works in 1986. It has subsequently been performed by the China Youth Symphony Orchestra on its European tour in 1987 and again on its German tour in 1988.
