"A Rainy Day," by John Brainard (1796-1828), was first published in 1822 ("Poems") and was reissued posthumously in 1832 ("Literary Remains"). Brainard briefly practiced law, and also served as editor of The Connecticut Mirror, but devoted himself to poetry.
