In Search of Stones
Nathaniel Tull Phillips
About this work:
In Search of Stones concerns the transition of four solitary self-contained identities (presented as isolated sound structures at the beginning of the piece, each with unique spatial and reverberant features). These identities (like the free standing stones found in the British countryside called Menhirs) are refined (by both composer and performer) and then subjected to stress? inducing rapid emotional changes (i.e., the rocks are pulverized). The fragments are then contemplated upon and reformed into composite structures (like the post and lintel stone constructions known as Dolmens) with new material binding the fragments together. These composite structures are revealed in alternate stages of construction until reaching a synergy between the fragments of the Menhirs and the new material, at which point the piece ends.
