About this work:
(Winner, National Flute Association Newly Published Flute Music Competition.) The title, "Bend Sinister," is taken from the name of a novel by Vladimir Nabokov. In the book's introduction, Nabokov writes that "[t]he term `bend sinister' means a heraldic bar or band drawn from the left side . . . [t]his choice of title was an attempt to suggest an outline broken by refraction, a distortion in the mirror of being . . ." The work received its premiere at Northwestern University in 1987.
