Four Studies In Temperaments
Allen Brings
About this work:
Four Studies in Temperaments was completed on February 13, 1987. The word "temperament" in the title refers to how we may be disposed at one moment to be nervous but at another moment thoughtful. From our own personal experiences we are also aware that we can be pensive but then suddenly exuberant and not understand why. Each study seeks to characterize a particular "temperament," some two or three. To perform these pieces well means that the players must understand what it means to them to be "introspective" or to do something "frenetically;" they must also pay close attention to how I have used changing dynamic levels and articulation in order to achieve these effects. Four Studies, finally, is a piece that can achieve these effects only if it is played by four bassoons!
