House and Garden Music
Andy Cohen
About this work:
House and Garden Music was composed as incidental music for the play Mrs. Warren's Profession by George Bernard
Shaw. The music is scored for two flutes and harp.
Mrs. Warren's Profession tell the story of Mrs. Warren, who has recently become a member of England's aristocracy, and her daughter Vivie, who is forced to confront a secret about her mother's past which upends her life. (The title of my work reflects the primary locations of the play: Mrs. Warren's cottage house and surrounding garden.) The musical themes and motives used in this composition aren't used to advance the plot
but instead to provide emotional and psychological resonance to the two principal characters and to underscore their feelings towards each other.
