Trine

Ernesto P. Pellegrini

About this work:

This work was made possible through a commission given by the Cathedral Arts and the Ronen Chamber Ensemble of Indianapolis, IN. First performance, October 17, 1989. In 3 movements: I – Immagine poetica: "Córdoba. Lejana y sola." (G. Lorca) II – Immagine spirituale: "Te Deum." III – Immagine giocosa: "Priesto oje ninne." Trine, a work in three short concise movements, speaks of imaginary thoughts, Each movement represents an image which is to be understood as an impression and not as a programmatic event that reveals in great detail a particular story, a character, or an ideal. The first image is poetic, and it is based on a poem by Garcia Lorca: “Córdoba. Lejana y sola.” In this brief poem, Lorca tells the story of Córdoba in a most simplistic and symbolic manner. The music reflects this mood by utilizing many of those musical clichés often associated with Spain. The second image, religious in nature, is based on the early chant: “Te Deum.” The chant is presented in fragmented phrases which primarily use the initial and ending ones of the work. Between these phrases short rhapsodic events are dispersed. The third and last image is a merry one. Based upon a Neapolitan folk song, it speaks of a youth and his mischievousness. The basic tune of the song becomes a cantus firmus to the movement, and the merry making associated with the youth is expressed in a typical Italian manner.
