Overture for Brass Quintet

Robert Paterson

About this work:
Overture for Brass Quintet was written in 1990, and for fifteen years it sat in my closet without a premiere. There were aspects of this work I was unhappy with, but after all that time, I finally decided to revise it so I could hear a live performance. Some composers consider it tretcherous to revise a work after so much time. This is understandable: afterall, you are basically a different composer, older and more experienced and have hopefully been exposed to a world of influences. However, I view this this particular revision process as a positive experience and it was quite fun. I corrected problems that I probably would not have noticed when I first wrote it and I made it tighter and more unified. After cleaning house, what I finally have is an exciting, highly rhythmic, virtuostic tour de force for brass quintet.
