Two Little Romances

Armando Bayolo

About this work:
The Two Little Romances for oboe and piano are a small piece d’ocassion written for my wife, Sharon, as an anniversary gift. Each of the two very brief movements uses the names of the two most important women in my life, my wife and my daughter, to generate their melodic material. “Sharon’s New Song” is new in that it uses material which I previously wrote for a work, for English horn and piano, written as an engagement present for my wife entitled, appropriately enough, “Sharon’s Song.” Like its predecessor, “Sharon’s New Song” is a lyrical composition using a great deal of “shimmering” sonorities. “Olivia’s Song (Bear Game)” is, by contrast, a playful scherzo meant to evoke the “really short” or “really long” games our daughter likes to play with us using her stuffed bears. The music is simple yet rhythmically vibrant and full of energy, just like its namesake.
