Up into the silence

Joelle Wallach

About this work:

Up Into the Silence is an unaccompanied cycle of seven songs with texts by e.e.cummings.  Playful and poignant, the songs explore a wide range of moods and vocal colors.  Written originally as a complete cycle for low voice, individual songs from Up Into the Silence may easily (as there is no accompaniment) be excerpted and transposed as needed to suit the range and tessitura of other singers.

Two versions of Up Into the Silence are available on Compact Disc: one by Israeli mezzo-soprano Mira Zakai, the other by German tenor, Gregory Wiest.

Review by Mark Greenfest, Feb 25, 2004   “The music boosts the flow of the text, and gives it added color, charm and spin. Exciting, unusual and quite marvelous.”
