Born in Boston in 1955, Peter Homans received his B.A. degree from Harvard in 1973 and a master's degree in composition in 1979 from Columbia, having studied with George Edwards and Jack Beeson. He has lived in New York City since 1977. To date, much of his compositional output has consisted of vocal music. His choral pieces have been performed by the Gregg Smith Singers, the New York Treble Singers, the Lycoming College Choir, The Technik Choir (Bratislava) and the PSOU Ostrava Choir. In 2003 Homans won first prize in the Fifth Diana Barnhart American Song Competition. In both 2004 and 2006 he won second prize at the International Festival of Choral Art Jihlava (Czech Republic) for his Agnus Dei for SATB choir a cappella and his "Duo Carmina Latina" for treble chorus and bassoon, respectively. His "Preamble for Peace" for mixed chorus a cappella was premiered by the United Nations Staff Recreation Council Singers at the opening of the UN pavilion at Expo 2010 Shanghai China. In his music, Homans uses musical styles from the course of the Western tradition to evoke contemporary psychological states.
