Dance Symphony
Ron Levy
About this work:
The first movement moves charmingly from a Renaissance, circus-like atmosphere, through a buffoonish second theme to a sinister, suspenseful third theme, finally turning back and restating all themes in reverse order. The centerpiece second movement features a charming, rivetingly memorable waltz (more of a LĂ„ndler, really), with a lone fiddler middle section straight out of the russian jewish shtetl. The third movement opens with pomp and grandeur, a stately procession which somehow combines a dignified noble quality with a meditative inner stillness. A klezmer-like clarinet line winds through the texture. Its animated middle theme reminds one of Handel; all themes finally combine and spin their way across the sky, over the horizon, and into the sunset.
